Mississippi in My Heart

There’s a little Mississippi in my heart
And a little South Africa, too
In a corner North Ireland hides in the dark
And breeds a little suspicion of you

The heart is a mystical place
And it changes like the faces of eve
Some days it’s full of honor and grace
Other days it’s full of pride and deceit

There are places where injustice abounds
So I stand on my soapbox and scream
But are my cries to Heaven as loud
About the hate and injustice in me?

I’ve witnessed hate in the eyes of a crowd
Of people who were different from me
But grace was waiting to be summoned out
Of a heart longing just to be free
