Helen

Helen
(for Helen Peel, where ever you are)

I remember Helen when she lived in Carolina
Her blonde hair kissed her shoulders and her green eyes flashed with fire
I would go to see her on the days I wasn’t working
We’d spend the hours together laughing and intensely talking
About life

I was only sixteen and I had a car to drive
She had just turned fifteen and was the love of my life
I drove the miles to see her whenever I was able
We exchanged eyes of passion across her mother’s kitchen table
As we dined

And she filled my days completely
And she filled my dreams so sweetly
But the sun came up each morning
And she faded without warning
Like a vapor in the mist cloud of my mind

I still can see her walking on the beach sand in the morning
The wind is softly blowing through her hair, long and flowing
I raise a hand to touch her on her tender, suntanned shoulder
But she takes my hand and guides it ’round her waist, so I get bolder
I pull her closer to me and I kiss her lips of honey
As I pour my soul into her aching eyes

And she fills my days completely
And she fills my dreams so sweetly
‘Til the sun comes up each morning
And she fades without warning
Like a vapor in the mist cloud of my mind

Just a vapor in the mist cloud of my mind
