They brought my baby to the courthouse
And they put her on the witness stand
The judge, he raised a bushy eyebrow
And asked how much she loved her man
My baby answered him, “Your honor,
I could tell but you won’t understand”
She laid her hand upon the Bible
And he made her swear to tell the truth
She smiled and said, “I never lie.”
And he answered, “That’s not in dispute.”
Then she batted her eyelashes
And the DA stood and called for proof.
It was the District Court of Love
And my heart was in my baby’s hands
Our love was on trial
And I didn’t know my baby’s plans
Was she gonna take me back
Or throw me out like useless contraband?
My baby testified, “Your Honor,
I love this man with all my heart.
If something bad should happen to him
It would tear my whole world apart.
He’s my man, my sugar baby,
He’s my honey and my true sweetheart.”
The judge nodded understanding
As he wiped a tear away from his eye.
He said, “Love ain’t never easy
And to that the world will testify.”
Then he looked at me and said,
“You better love her til the day you die.”
