This Too Shall Pass

I fell asleep while trying to pray
And as in a dream I was taken away
From high on a hill, I looked over the sea
And watched as a storm cloud came rushing at me

I was carried through time and deep history
I watched mountains rise then fall to the sea
And all through the ages the nations of men
Would rise to power then fall away again

But, no, no, this too shall pass
Bad days don’t stay and good days won’t last
No, no, this too shall pass
All things must pass away

I walked along the dark city streets
Where people ran by without shoes on their feet
I turned to see what was causing their flight
And heard hunger beating like drums in the night

I raised my hands and cried, “No, this is wrong.”
I raised my head and cried, “Lord, how long?”

But, no, no, this too shall pass
Bad days don’t stay and good days won’t last
No, no, this too shall pass
All things must pass away

So gaze in your mirror; take stock of your life
Consider these things as you peer in your eyes
Remember that nothing you see ever stays
All things on Earth will soon pass away
