Doldrums

I’m as parched as my parchment
in a dry and thirsty land
My wellspring of words now
barely trickles from my hand
My muse no longer muses
And my sails have lost their wind
I’m drifting in the doldrums again

I’m drifting in the Doldrums
Of the South Creative Sea
The breeze that once propelled my ship
Has since deserted me
My words are all as listless
As a gull who cannot fly
I’m drifting in the doldrums
And cannot answer why

Work It

From Ecclesiastes 3

What does the worker gain from all his labor
If all he works for is the bread on his table?
Eternity is set in the heart of man
And each day happens just the way God planned

There is nothing better than for men to be happy
And to do good all the days they may live
For every man to find purpose in his labor
This is God’s precious gift

I know everything God does will endure
We add nothing nor take anything away
Yet we continue in our labor til we die
Then who can say where our spirit resides?

Work unto the Lord
Whatever work you do
This is the how the joy of work
Comes to live in you

Naked Trees

Naked Trees

Do leaves get tired of living by the end of summertime
When cold north winds blow autumn into town?
Then to fulfill their promise to the future of the planet
They fall, crisp and dry to the ground.

Naked Trees in winter reach their fingers to the sky
Barren and alone
Stripped of all their clothes
In freezing air they shiver and stifle whimpered cries
And dream the winter dreams of naked trees

The seasons run their cycles in the stream of endless time
As years drift away like falling snow
A life is but a whisper in the wind of eternity
Like a leaf clinging vainly to a tree

Tomorrow Never Knows

Tomorrow Never Knows

Father time is blind to the days he’s left behind
Oblivious to the days yet to come
He lives in the fleeting momentary stream of time
And only knows their passing when they’re gone

Tomorrow never knows what the future holds
Today is but tomorrows yesterday
Yesterday we looked ahead and planned the best we could
Never knowing where we’d be today
Tomorrow never knows what the future holds
The Future is a changing destiny
Expanding in a spiral down the corridors of time
From distant past to far eternity

All the days that come our way are gifts to be enjoyed
We never know which day will be our last
So live life in the moment; don’t wish your days away
And never waste time wishing for the past

Speaking Braille

Speaking Braille

You might as well be speaking Braille
’cause I can’t see what you’re saying
Your twisted logic derails
Any hope of communication

I’m trying to speak your language
So I can help you find the trail
But you harbor so much verbal baggage
That you might as well be speaking Braille

I don’t understand the words coming out of your mouth
And I don’t think you know what you’re talking about
Your pointed objections are an interesting ruse
You give a new definition to confused

The Woman I Love

The Woman I Love

[verse1]
I’ve got a sweet lovin’ woman named Harriet
She’s got a heart so big I can’t carry it
She loves to drive me around in her chariot
Oh, that Harriet; the woman I love

[verse2]
Love’s a slow mystery – you can’t be rushin’ it
It’s not a throwaway thing so don’t be flushin’ it
It’s your heart on a string so don’t be crushin’ it
Just keep mushin’ it – That thing they call love

[chorus1]Yea, she’s the woman I love;
And my heart is hers alone
I could never love another
‘Cause she’d break all my bones
She’s the woman I love;
I know I’ll never stray
‘Cause she keeps me tied
To the bedpost all day
She’s the woman I love
The woman I love

[verse3]
Love creeps up on you when you’re least expectin’ it
You can sleep when you’re through resurrectin’ it
In a moment or two you’re recollectin’ it
Then disinfectin’ it – oh, yea.. you’re in love

[chorus2] She’s the woman I love;
My heart is hers alone
And she tracks my every move
On my cellular phone
She’s the woman I love;
I know I’ll never stray
‘Cause she locks this ball and chain
Around my ankle all day
She’s the woman I love
The woman I love

[verse 4]
Love is funny, but nothing to laugh about
When a problem comes up you have to thrash it out
Like a pimple on love’s butt, you just mash it out
Oh, without a doubt you’ll find you’re in love

[chorus1]

[bridge] Sometimes I feel like I been run over by a train
But I keep going back again ’cause love is worth the pain

Mistaken Identity

Mistaken Identity

“You’re somebody famous!”,
she said and I laughed
As I kindly obliged her
with an autograph.
This kind of thing happens
pretty often with me
It’s a case of
mistaken identity

I have the face of
somebody with fame
But nobody ever
remembers my name
They’re sure they’ve seen me
on the big screen
Another case of
mistaken identity

I’m sure that I know you…
You’re mistaken, my dear…
I know you’re somebody…
No argument here…
Can I have your autograph…
I’m so tired of this…
Here’s my hotel key…
Well, if you insist…

The blue lights were flashing,
I pulled to the curb
Jerked from the front seat
with some choice dirty words
Eight hours later
I was finally released
Another case of
mistaken identity

I Don’t Deserve A Good Woman

I Don’t Deserve A Good Woman

My papa never taught me how to treat a woman right
And any time I’m with a woman seems I always want to fight
I’d like to find a good woman who’ll love me whatever it takes
But every time a good woman comes along I chase her away

[chorus]
I don’t deserve a good woman;
I’m low down, ugly, and mean to the bone.
If I got what I deserved
I’d spend the rest of my life alone
I’ve tried to deny it
But I finally realized it’s true
I don’t deserve a good woman
That’s why I got you

My mama tol’ me, “Son, don’t ever treat a woman bad”
But I didn’t wanna listen so I slapped her and made her mad
She spanked my little bottom and stood me in a corner all day
And as soon as I could I packed a bag and ran away

[chorus]

If you got a good woman you can take a lesson from me
You want to know how to treat her – just watch what I do and you’ll see
Take notes if you want; tell anyone you want to tell
And what you see me doing – go do anything else

[bridge]
We’re two of a kind, it’s plain to see
You don’t deserve a good man, so you got me!

[chorus]

I Want Magic in My Romance

I Want Magic in My Romance

[chorus] I want magic in my romance
Midnight symphonies
Fireworks and rock bands
Electricity
I want thunder and lightning
As we sail love’s sea
I want magic in my romance
Can you do that for me?

[v1]
I don’t want
love that’s a bore
or a chore; I want more than
three minutes til you’re snoring.
I don’t want
love that’s sedate;
always late; never lacy
never racy or adoring.
I want a love I can’t hide;
I want it so big inside me
That it sends me into space.
I want it all on my face.

[chorus]

[v2]
I don’t
want a love that’s tired,
uninspired, or expired;
give me love that’s exciting.
I don’t want it if it’s used,
or abused; I’m not amused
If my love’s not inviting.
I want a love I can explore;
I want you so hot for me
That you want me right away.
I want a love that can’t wait.

[bridge]
I won’t waste my time in pursuit of a lover who’s a loner
I want to taste the sublime fleshy fruit of a live organ donor

[chorus]

I Am Mighty

I Am Mighty

I feel so small and there are giants in the land
I feel so weak when I look at myself
Foes rise against me with blood on their hands
Where can I go but to you for help?

[chorus]
I have no strength within myself
To take on this fight
My only hope is You –
I walk by faith and not sight
I Am Mighty because you are my strength
I am holy for I carry your name
I am fearless with you by my side
I am mighty; I am mighty; I am mighty
Because you are my strength

Called to battle ‘gainst an unseen foe
My only armor is my faith
And when I storm the enemy’s stronghold
You guard my back and keep me safe

[chorus]
